Fourth Year - First Semester
The project is a recreational sports facility located along the Arkansas River in North Little Rock, Arkansas. In a series of moves delaminating the roof from the ground, the building is able to support a dynamic range of environmental design strategies. A lush park space above ground is supported by rainwater collection and native plants along the roofscapes. The sub-grade interior gym and recreational spaces are able to collect ample daylight, promoting wellness and activity for the occupants.

Arkansas Riverfront Trail/Levee Wall System

Situated on the bank of the Arkansas River, Delaminated Ground leverages its proximity to both the natural landscape and the urban fabric of Little Rock. The recreational building complex blends seamlessly into the surrounding site providing open spaces for pedestrians and cyclists, promoting connectivity and engagement with the community.
The roof planes are designed to collect rainwater, redirecting runoff towards wetland areas, filtering the water and returning it to the Arkansas River. Native plantings along the roofscape visually soften the structures, while also providing ample habitat for migratory and local bird populations.

Locally produced southern pine glulam is abundant within the structure, comprising a majority of members within the diagrid and zipper truss systems.

Overall, the building merges sustainable architecture with community-focused design principles, offering both ecological and social benefits. It prioritizes pedestrian and cyclist-friendly spaces forging a connection between Downtown Little Rock and the Argenta neighborhood in North Little Rock. The use of natural materials, open layouts, and vibrant green spaces reflects a contemporary commitment to sustainability by reclaiming the riverbank for a desirable public facility.

The terraced design of the site continues on the interior of the building, with the large gym spaces embedded into the earth, mitigating harsh lighting conditions while also framing views around Little Rock. Interior materials have been carefully selected to promote wellness, while also reducing embodied carbon in construction.
